fun with dye

So, I was at Kirkleatham last saturday, doing some storytelling (Beowulf, cos it was saxon fun day) and amongst the other activities there was Rachel, who was one of the students on the Young roots Saxon textiles project I took part in about five years ago.

She has since made a career out of natural dyeing, and was doing naturally dyed prints based on the finds in the museum.

Obviously I had a go. It was string glued to cardboard to make the stamp, then natural dye printed onto naturally dyed silk squares

The left hand one, which looks somehow minoan to me, was (I think) silk dyed with oak printed with walnut, and the right hand one, which is based on the main jewel in the exhibition, was madder dyed silk and I forget what the print medium was.

It was fun tho!
