MUcking about – petrus christus dress accesories

NOt much sewing has been done this week. Partly because of Harewood (sorry, didn’t take pics, too busy running around organising the fashion show), partly due to a frenzy of trying to organise a batch of silver to go off to be hallmarked.

I have, however, been working on a necklace to wear with the velvet dress, based on Memling’s Salome. Most of it is still a pile of component’s that are going too Goldsmith’s Hall to be stamped, but today I Fired up the kiln and enamelled some flowers…

They haven’t been cleaned yet, and a couple need re-firing. What’s odd is that percieved wisdom says you shouldn’t use old enamel, but the blue pink and ivory are all old and worked fine, but the snow white was a new batch and all the ones that need re-firing due to faults are the white – I can only conclude it’s a dodgy batch. The central holes are where they will eventually be attached to the necklace.

  2. Is enamelling based on a chemical effect or a physical effect? I’m not sure I can see why the age of the enamel should matter, unless a chemical reaction is exhausted..

    • physical – you basically melt ground glass onto metal. I can’t see why age should matter either, but all the books say it does. I think it might be a problem with snow white, that maybe it needs thinner layers to prevent flaking – reds are notoriously difficult – colours vary because of the pigments
