When I first looked closeley at the halo I thought the radials were also in gold thread surface couched, but when I looked again I realised they were split stiched silk. Then I spent ages agonising over what colour silk to use, as the original silk looks quite faded and did I want to brighten it? In the end I used yellow with the strip of white down the middle.

There are no pearls on the original, but there are gaps where pearls might have been, so I think this is an acceptable educated guess type reconstruction.

Next step is applying it to velvet and couching the wing feathers. I was going to do it whilst I sat sewing at York this weekend, but in the end the light wasn’t good enough, so it will have to wait until next week to be finished.

  1. What is the gold work stitch? Love the radials. And the slightly worried facial expression.

  2. I can imagine needing a very good light for that!
